XERXES - the Persian king who ruled the Persian empire from 486-464 B.C.E. Xerxes (known in the Book of Esther as Ahasuerus) was the son of Darius the Great and the grandson of Cyrus the Great. While he campaigned against the Greeks, he was never able to defeat them.
