E

ESCHATOLOGY - term referring to the teachings concerning the events of the end of the world. The word is based on the Greek term eschatos, meaning "last" or "final." Thus eschatology is the study of the events expected to occur at the close of world history. In the Hebrew Bible a variety of prophets (e.g., Ezek. 40:1-48:35, Zech. 14:1-21) and other writers (e.g., Dan. 7:1-12:13) wrote what God had revealed to them about the end of time. Other writers in the apocryphal and pseudepigraphal writings and in the New Testament also wrote about eschatology.

EXPIATION - the act of making atonement for something. A ritual or sacrifice with the purpose of expiation would seek to remove the guilt the worshiper had incurred.
