LAMENT - a type of psalm which expresses frustration and anger at present circumstances but often ends with an expression of trust in God's ultimate rescue of the one suffering. Laments can focus on an individual (e.g., Pss. 7, 22) or the entire community (e.g., Pss. 79, 137). Of all psalm types in the Book of Psalms, laments are the most numerous. In general the form of a lament is:
LITERARY ANALYSIS - in general refers to the study of biblical materials as one would study any literature. Literary analysis began as source analysis but moved in the direction of studying the elements and structure of the text in an effort to understand better the author's intentions. Basically have discovered that the literary analysis practiced by literary critics can be fruitful in biblical studies as well.
