O

ORACLES - communications from a deity or deities. The word "oracle" is translated sometimes by other words such as "burden," "saying," or "word." The term could refer to an entire prophetic book (e.g., Mal. 1:1), a portion of a prophetic book (e.g., Hab. 1:1), or a particular message by a prophet (e.g., 1 Kings 21:17-19, 2 Kings 3:13-20). Some oracles were sought from a deity to answer a question the individual or people had. The deity's will might be determined by casting lots believing that the deity would cause the lots to fall a certain way providing a clear answer. Other oracles came unsought from the deity, particularly in Israel. Such messages might be revealed in auditory experiences, visions, dreams, or in the simple observation of the world. Oracles were to be spoken and not kept to oneself. The oracle was the typical speech form used by Israel's prophets.
