Hezekiah's Tunnel

Knowing that the Assyrians would someday besiege Jerusalem, Hezekiah began constructing a tunnel in ca. 711 B.C.E. to bring water from the Gihon spring to the Siloam pool. An inscription located within the tunnel tells how the tunnel was cut. Two teams began, one on each end, and met in the middle. The tunnel was cut through more than 1,500 feet of bedrock and was an amazing engineering achievement. The completion of the tunnel guaranteed Jerusalem's water supply during a siege.
