Mt. Gilboa overlooks the Valley of Jezreel. It was here that Saul, his sons, and his troops fought the Philistines (1 Sam. 31:2). Saul's sons (Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua) were killed in the battle and Saul was mortally wounded. Saul later committed suicide by falling on his sword. David lamented the loss of Saul and Jonathan (2 Sam. 1:19-27) specifically mentioning Gilboa as the place of their death (2 Sam. 1:21).
